Our vision for our family of academies is to see each rooted in its community, contributing richly to local life and benefiting in turn from connections with the wider neighbourhood. An important opportunity to develop these links is through an energetic Local Governing Body that includes people with a diverse range of skills, interests and involvement in different areas of the community.

Becoming a governor can be enormously rewarding. As well as the chance to make a real difference to the lives of young people, there are opportunities to gain new skills and to meet more people in the community.  Collectively, Governors make key decisions about the strategic direction of an academy; for example, on the curriculum, school improvement, pupil targets, budget, staffing, health and safety and the management of premises. Training and support are provided and new governors are partnered with a ‘buddy’ – a trusted and more experienced colleague on the governing body – who initially acts as their mentor.

We see Governors playing a key role in providing strong local governance in our academies. Depending on the circumstances of each academy, we devolve a high level of delegated powers to local governing bodies. Our governing bodies are smaller than many maintained school governing bodies, so we are careful to ensure that each governor is supported to make a difference to the academy in some way. There are also opportunities for governors to provide an input to decision-making at the Trust Board level.

We welcome applications from those with financial, human resources and estates experience, as well as from those with strong local community connections. If you are interested in becoming an academy governor please contact Louise Birch at the University of Chichester Academy Trust on 01243 816444 or email L.Birch@chi.ac.uk for further information and an application form.

My passion is to see children and young people inspired by great teachers and being given the opportunities to believe they can all achieve throughout their school life.

As a governor at Flying Bull Academy, it is a privilege to work alongside such a dedicated and talented staff team who are committed to wanting the very best for every child in the school. Flying Bull Governor
