The Portsmouth Primary School-Centred Initial Teacher Training (SCITT) program is your gateway to becoming a proficient and confident educator, qualified to teach children aged 5-11 in primary, junior, and infant schools. This dynamic, full-time Post-Graduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) with Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) course offers a balanced blend of real-world experience and practical workshops, meticulously designed to prepare you for a successful teaching career. Throughout your journey, you will be immersed in classrooms where you’ll observe and collaborate with experienced class teachers. This hands-on approach allows you to gradually develop your teaching skills while working alongside mentors who are dedicated to your growth.

At Portsmouth Primary SCITT, we prioritise your success. You’ll receive exceptional mentoring from experienced educators, as well as unwavering support from our dedicated SCITT team. This support network ensures that you evolve into a skilled and self-assured early career teacher (ECT).

You will start your journey with a half-term of workshops, where you’ll delve into primary subject knowledge, professional studies, and pedagogical techniques. These engaging sessions primarily take place in our training room at Stamshaw Junior School.

Following the initial workshops, embark on a half-term of teacher training in your placement school, where you’ll put theory into practice. After the Christmas break, a shorter block of workshops precedes a cross-phase placement in a contrasting school, broadening your horizons and experiences.

After Easter, you will return for a three-week workshop phase to consolidate your knowledge and understanding. Then, revisit your initial placement school to witness the level of progress students can achieve in just one academic year.

You can expect regular, constructive feedback and personalised coaching from your mentor (typically the teacher you’re partnered with) and our experienced SCITT mentoring and Link Tutor team. Your development journey considers your unique path and well-being.

Our assessment criteria revolve around your ability to meet the Professional Standards for Qualified Teacher Status and Requirements for Initial Teacher Training. As part of your journey, you’ll compile a portfolio of assignments grounded in classroom research, showcasing your ability to seamlessly integrate theory with practice.

Join Portsmouth Primary SCITT, and embark on a transformative educational journey that will empower you to excel as a primary school teacher, fully equipped to inspire and educate the next generation.
