Fernhurst Primary School started the term with three of their musicians going to Midhurst Rother College for a locality Orchestra Day, where they prepared three pieces which they will perform at MRC’s Spring concert in mid March.
Hot on the heels was a trip for some school musician’s to the children’s concert at Chichester Festival Concert. Here they listened to an orchestra and learnt about the different instruments, and one of them even got to conduct the orchestra. An excellent afternoon and the children behaved brilliantly.
Years 5 and 3 have had “Big Sings” this term also, when they have gone to the local secondary with children of their own year group to sing and generally have fun using their voices.
This was all before half term! Now the school are preparing for two performances by members of the school choir. 11 Year 5 and 6 children who sing in the choir are taking part in a singing event at Chichester Cathedral, with school from West Sussex, and some of the cathedral choristers. The songs all have a theme, with the event being titled Voices For Peace. One of the pieces they will be singing has been written specifically for the event.
The whole choir is also getting ready to sing to a group of retired ladies and gentlemen in the village, the Good Companions, who look forward to our annual little concert each year. Those children who play instruments, and are in the choir are also invited to play, to give their voices a rest.
Year 3 and 4 are preparing for their end of term production Wiz Wham Alakazam, a musical about working together and showing that everyone has something to offer.
Fernhurst have been very busy with music at the school – and this is all on top of weekly lessons for musicians, a class learning the ukulele with the West Sussex Music Trust teacher, and music lessons in their classes.
